The Arizona Museum of Natural History in downtown Mesa, Arizona will soon feature an iconic sculpture of a life-sized dinosaur bursting out of the upper levels of the museum. The dinosaur, which is an Acrocanthosaurus, was created by Dimensional Innovations, a national and award-winning exhibit design firm, and Staab Studios, an eclectic art studio with expertise in bringing prehistoric models to life.

“We are very excited to add this iconic element to the downtown community. It will attract an audience to downtown Mesa, and to the Arizona Museum of Natural History,” said Dr. Tom Wilson, Director of the museum. “Far too often we hear that people didn’t realize that we had a natural history museum, or they didn’t consider visiting. This impressive structure will go a long way to correct that.”

The dinosaur will be located on the brick wall on Pepper Place.

A Free the Dinosaur Celebration hosted by the City Mayor is planned for Tuesday, May 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at:
53 N. Macdonald
Mesa, Arizona 85201

“All of us at Dimensional Innovations are very excited and honored to have been chosen to bring the museum’s vision to life. It has been amazing to work with a world-class team of archeologists, paleontologists, and artists to create a one-of-a-kind experience for Mesa,” said Dave Starr, Practice Director for Dimensional Innovations. “We’ve worked on several large-scale projects over the years, but this has absolutely been one of the most fun!”

The Arizona Museum of Natural History collected donations to contribute towards the creation of the sculpture in a “Free the Dinosaur” campaign, bringing together the downtown community and the City of Mesa. The life-size dinosaur will be one of the few sculptures in the world posed this way.

“Placing a prehistoric animal in a contemporary setting creates an intriguing contrast that gets kids excited and interested in science and paleontology,” said Gary Staab of Staab Studios.

The grand unveiling will take place shortly before the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) will meet in Phoenix for their annual convention May 6 – 9, drawing nearly 5,000 attendees from all over the world. It also comes shortly before the movie Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is released this summer.
